Proof of Funds Requirements for 2026

To immigrate to Canada through most economic programs, you must prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your family after you arrive in Canada.

Why Proof of Funds is Required

The Canadian government requires proof of funds to ensure that immigrants can successfully settle without needing social assistance. This requirement demonstrates your ability to support your family while you look for employment and establish yourself in Canada.

2026 Minimum Funds Requirements

The amount of money you need depends on the size of your family. The table below shows the minimum funds required for 2026 (in Canadian dollars):

Acceptable Proof of Funds Documents

When submitting your application, you must provide official letters from your financial institutions that confirm your financial profile. Here are the acceptable documents:

Primary Documents

  • Bank account statements for the past 6 months
  • Letters from your financial institution confirming your account details, balances, and average balances
  • Proof of investments (stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills)
  • Proof of registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs)
  • Proof of tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs)

Additional Acceptable Documents

  • Proof of real estate holdings with market value assessments
  • Proof of other assets that can be easily converted to cash
  • Letter from someone who is giving you money as a gift or loan (with proof of their financial capacity)

Important: You must be able to transfer these funds to Canada. Assets that cannot be liquidated or transferred (such as property you plan to keep in your home country) are not acceptable as proof of funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need proof of funds if I have a job offer in Canada?

If you have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer and are currently authorized to work in Canada, you may be exempt from the proof of funds requirement for some programs. However, for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you still need to show proof of funds even with a job offer unless you are currently working in Canada.

Can I use my spouse’s funds for proof of funds?

Yes, you can use funds held jointly with your spouse or common-law partner. However, you must prove that you have access to these funds and that they can be used for your settlement in Canada.

How recent must my bank statements be?

Bank statements should typically be no more than 6 months old at the time of application. The letter from your bank should be recent, usually dated within 30 days of submission.
