Canada 2026: IELTS vs CELPIP – The Ultimate Language Test Guide

🇨🇦 Language Testing 2026

IELTS General Training vs CELPIP General – the only two English tests for Canadian immigration (Express Entry, PNP, citizenship)
IRCC approved · March 2026
📢 2026 key updates: PTE Core now also accepted (third option) but this guide focuses on the two most established tests. New PGWP language rules (CLB 7 for university / CLB 5 for college) affect post‑grad work permits. Test scores for citizenship never expire; for PR they are valid 2 years.

🧭 Which test should you take? (2026 perspective)

  • 🌏 you need a test accepted outside Canada (UK/Australia)

🔄 PTE Core (new option)

  • 🤖 Fully AI-scored, results in 48h
  • 🧠 Many find CLB 9 easier to achieve due to integrated scoring
  • 📍 25 centres in Canada (more limited)
  • ⚡ Also accepted for PR, but not covered in depth here
